The Guyana Police Force has reported that 15 officers are currently facing criminal charges this year, with more than half of them implicated in rape cases.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum revealed that eight officers are facing rape charges, while one is charged with murder. Other offenses include drug trafficking and causing death by dangerous driving.
Among those accused is Police Sergeant Philbert Kendall, charged with the murder of 21-year-old Ronaldo Peters in Linden. Kendall allegedly pursued Peters in a private mini-bus without wearing his uniform.
Another officer, 19-year-old Police Constable Erwin Gentle, has been remanded for allegedly raping a child under the age of 16. Police Constable Sherman Ferguson is also in legal trouble, facing charges for possession of narcotics with intent to traffic after police found 34.6 kilograms of cannabis in his vehicle.
Additionally, three officers—Grenville Harris, Latchman Singh, and Floyd Pellew—are charged with the theft of 400 grams of suspected narcotics valued at $360,000 from the Ruimveldt Police Station.
Police Corporal Yonelle Cumberbatch is facing charges for causing death by dangerous driving after hitting a 15-year-old schoolboy at a pedestrian crossing.
Despite these challenges, Blanhum noted a 12% reduction in serious crimes this year due to ongoing training and collaboration with local and international law enforcement agencies. However, he acknowledged that domestic murders had doubled in 2025, indicating the need for continued efforts to address misconduct within the ranks.
