Ewart Baychu, a 19-year-old gold miner from Tapacuma Village, has been charged with the murder of his employer, 55-year-old John José Marciano, a gold miner from Wismar, Linden. The incident occurred on February 7, 2026, at a mining camp located at 14 Miles Issano Backdam in the Middle Mazaruni River region.

Baychu appeared via Zoom at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday before Magistrate Ravindra Mohabir. He was not required to enter a plea and has been remanded to prison until his next court date on March 27, 2026.
Marciano was found dead early on February 7, with police reporting that his body was discovered around 3:45 AM at the mining camp. He was found slouched on the ground with multiple chop wounds. A cutlass, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered near the scene.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the police also reporting the involvement of a 35-year-old female cook from Ann’s Grove, East Coast Demerara. The details regarding her potential connection to the case have not been fully disclosed.
