A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday along the Cornelia Ida Public Road, West Coast Demerara, resulting in the death of a 64-year-old man identified as Roy Chanka. According to police reports, Chanka was riding an electric cycle when he was struck by a truck.
The incident took place around 1:56 p.m. The driver of the truck, a 42-year-old man from Friendship, East Bank Demerara, is currently in police custody and is assisting with the investigation.
Initial reports indicate that the truck was traveling west along the southern side of the road and was attempting to turn south into the Cornelia Ida Access Road when the left front wheel struck Chanka.
Chanka was found unconscious at the scene and was quickly transported to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His body has since been taken to Ezekiel Funeral Home, pending a post-mortem examination.
As part of the ongoing investigation, CCTV footage from the area has been obtained and reviewed. A breathalyzer test administered to the truck driver revealed no traces of alcohol.
