A 17-year-old is among three males remanded on Friday in connection with the murder of a Chinese national during an alleged robbery. Colwin Morris and Peter Baker, both 29 and residents of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, Canje, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Michelle Matthias at the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court alongside the teenager.

The court learned that on December 22, 2025, the accused allegedly murdered 61-year-old Chen Yongping in Cumberland Village, East Canje, Berbice during the course of a robbery. They were not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

During the proceedings, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Mark Edwards noted that the case file was incomplete, as the post-mortem examination report for Yongping was still pending. Attorney-at-law Chandra Sohan represented Baker and Morris, while the 17-year-old was unrepresented.

In an unrelated incident, it was alleged that on December 13, 2025, Morris, accompanied by another individual armed with a firearm, robbed Wazir Mohamed in Cumberland Village. Mohamed reported losing a 12 pennyweight gold chain valued at $150,000, a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra worth $315,000, and $230,000 in cash, totaling $695,000. Police Prosecutor Corporal Leon Jones confirmed that the case file for this robbery was complete, and Morris pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Both Morris and Baker were remanded to prison, while the 17-year-old was sent to the Juvenile Holding Centre. The case has been transferred to Reliance Magistrate’s Court for further proceedings scheduled for January 14, 2026.
