Disturbance in Demerara Berbice Interconnected System

News

At approximately 06:54 AM, a burst conductor on the L22 Transmission Line between Canefield and No. 53 Village, combined with a damaged transformer panel at the Onverwagt Substation, caused the 36 MW Powership at Everton, Berbice to go offline. This incident resulted in a cascading effect and a system disturbance across the Demerara Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS).

In response to the disturbance, our technical teams initiated restoration efforts immediately. By around 10:00 AM, electricity supply was restored to most affected areas. However, customers located between Onverwagt and Ithaca remain without power due to the ongoing issues with the damaged transformer panel at the Onverwagt Substation.

Remedial works are currently underway to repair the damaged equipment and restore electricity to the remaining affected areas.

The Guyana Power and Light (GPL) extends its apologies for the inconvenience caused and thanks customers for their patience and understanding during this challenging situation. Further updates will be provided as restoration efforts continue.
