Griffith explained to reporters that the investigation is ongoing and that the ministry is in the process of assessing all relevant protocols. “We are awaiting the final report from the Police. Once that is available, we will provide details to the public,” he stated.

The tragedy claimed the lives of 18-year-old Brandon Deonarine, a seaman from Support, East Bank Demerara; 57-year-old Nerwaine Persaud, a boat captain from Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara; 33-year-old Dominic Alexis, a seaman from De Kinderen, West Coast Demerara; and 25-year-old Getindra Sanchara, an engineer from Cummings Lodge.

Reports indicate that Persaud and Deonarine were the first to enter the engine room of a cargo barge for a dry inspection when they collapsed. Alexis rushed to assist them but subsequently lost consciousness as well, followed by Sanchara during his attempt to help.

A 66-year-old seaman present at the scene described experiencing chest stiffness and difficulty breathing upon attempting to enter the confined space, which prompted him to retreat and call emergency services.

The four men were transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they were pronounced dead.

As of now, there has been no official communication from the Guyana Police Force regarding the autopsy results, which were reportedly conducted on Monday. Police have indicated that samples were taken from the deceased and submitted to the forensic laboratory for examination.

Griffith further mentioned that he is not aware of any toxicology reports or assessments being requested at this time, highlighting the need for thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
