The accident involved:

Motor lorry: GAK 7143 with trailer attached TYY 9718

Driver: 30-year-old male of Little Abary, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara

Pedal cyclist: Shawn Roache, 24-year-old construction worker of Agricola, East Bank Demerara (deceased)

Initial enquiries indicated that the lorry with its trailer was traveling west along the southern driving lane, following the pedal cyclist, who was also traveling west along the same lane.

Police said that near the Farm/Supply area, the lorry driver reportedly overtook the cyclist. During the manoeuvre, the left-side rear wheel of the trailer reportedly came into contact with the rear wheel of the bicycle, causing Roache to lose control and move underneath the trailer, where the wheel ran over his left foot.

As a result of the collision, the cyclist sustained injuries to his body. Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned, and Roache was examined by a duty doctor attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, who pronounced him dead at the scene.

The body was escorted to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

Police reported that a breathalyzer test conducted on the lorry driver found no trace of alcohol in his breath.

The driver is currently in police custody assisting with investigations, which are ongoing.
