Five Motorists Face Traffic Violations in Essequibo Coast Court Cases

Five motorists appeared before Anna Regina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28th April, 2026, to answer charges relating to various traffic offences, with four pleading guilty and one contesting a drunk driving allegation.

Trevor Smith Fined for Refusing Breath Test

Trevor Smith, a 70-year-old pensioner of Henrietta, Essequibo Coast, was charged with Refusing to Provide a Breath Specimen for a Breath Alcohol Test under Section 39B (5) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act.

The offence was committed on Tuesday, 21st April, 2026, at Cotton Field Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Before His Worship Mr. Tariq Mohamed, Smith pleaded guilty and was fined $30,000, with an alternative of two months’ imprisonment in default.

Denesh Persaud Convicted on Multiple Counts

Denesh Persaud, a 23-year-old labourer of Mainstay, Essequibo Coast, faced three separate charges for offences committed on Saturday, 18th April, 2026, at Mainstay Access Road, Essequibo Coast.

Persaud pleaded guilty to all matters and was fined as follows:

  • Driving Whilst Breath Alcohol Level Exceeds the Prescribed Limit: $250,000, in default three months’ imprisonment
  • Unlicensed Driver: $40,000, in default two months’ imprisonment
  • Breach of Insurance: $25,000, in default two weeks’ imprisonment

Yumesh Prabhoonath Refuses Breath Test

Yumesh Prabhoonath, a 37-year-old labourer of Onderneeming Sandpit, Essequibo Coast, was charged with Refusing to Provide a Breath Specimen for a Breath Alcohol Test under Section 39B (5) of the Motor Vehicle and Road Traffic Act.

The offence was committed on Saturday, 5th April, 2026, at Reliance Public Road, Essequibo Coast. Prabhoonath pleaded guilty and was fined $30,000, with an alternative of two weeks’ imprisonment in default.

Ronson Peters Contests Drunk Driving Charge

Ronson Peters, a 20-year-old construction worker of Sparta, Essequibo Coast, faced three charges for offences committed on Sunday, 19th April, 2026, at Sparta Public Road, Essequibo Coast.

Peters pleaded guilty to two charges:

  • Unlicensed Driver: fined $40,000, in default two weeks’ imprisonment
  • Unregistered Motor Vehicle: fined $25,000, in default two weeks’ imprisonment

However, Peters pleaded not guilty to Driving Whilst Breath Alcohol Level Exceeds the Prescribed Limit and was granted bail in the sum of $100,000. The matter was adjourned to 2nd September, 2026, for trial.

Monte Williams Fined for Vehicle Permit Violations

Monte Williams, a 39-year-old miner of Lot 445 Charity, Essequibo Coast, was charged with Permitting Breach of Insurance and Permitting an Unlicensed Driver.

The offences were committed on Sunday, 26th April, 2026, at Mainstay Lake Access Road, Essequibo Coast. Before His Worship Mr. Tariq Mohamed, Williams pleaded guilty to both offences and was fined $25,000 for Permitting Breach of Insurance, with a default sentence of two weeks’ imprisonment.

The cases reflect ongoing enforcement efforts by traffic authorities against impaired driving, unlicensed operations, and insurance violations across the Essequibo Coast region.
