According to preliminary reports, the incident occurred at approximately 21:00 hours after police received information about a male reportedly walking in the area with a firearm.

Acting on the tip, ranks responded to the location where they encountered a 27-year-old man of Better Hope, East Coast Demerara.

Police said that upon seeing the officers, the suspect allegedly drew a handgun and discharged several rounds in their direction. Ranks returned fire in self-defence, prompting the suspect to flee south.

A chase ensued, with the man reportedly scaling several fences before being apprehended in a nearby yard.

A search conducted on him led to the discovery of a black .32 CZ firearm.

The suspect was arrested and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, where the firearm was lodged and his hands were swabbed for gunpowder residue as part of ongoing investigations.

He was later escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation for treatment of a gunshot wound to his right leg. He remains hospitalised under police guard as investigations continue.

Police investigations into the incident are continuing to determine the full circumstances of the shooting and establish whether the suspect’s actions were justified or if charges will be laid.
