Trinidad : Tragic Shooting Claims Life of 14-Year-Old in Belmont

Daily Express Reports : A tragic incident occurred earlier today when 14-year-old Zion Roberts was shot and killed in Belmont. According to police reports, the shooting happened around 10:25 a.m. as Roberts and another man, slightly older, were standing on Serraneau Road off St. Francois Valley Road.

Witnesses reported that a car of unknown make and model stopped near the two young men, and a man armed with an automatic rifle opened fire, striking both Roberts and his companion. In a desperate attempt to escape, both boys tried to flee, but the gunman continued to fire, with police later recovering over 40 shell casings from the scene.

After the shooting, the assailant sped off in the vehicle. Residents promptly called the police, and officers from the Belmont Police Station, CID, and the Inter Agency Task Force quickly arrived. They were subsequently joined by officers from the Region One Homicide Bureau, but efforts to locate the assailants were unsuccessful.

Relatives and neighbors gathered near the scene, sharing their memories of the young boy. One neighbor described Roberts as a normal child with “mannish” ways, stating, “He was not disrespectful or anything. Very nice boy but he loved to walk around barebacked.” Another neighbor added that they had often warned him to stay off the road due to the potential dangers.

A relative, who wished to remain anonymous, revealed that Roberts was a form two pupil at Success Laventille Secondary School.

As of this afternoon, the toll of homicides in the area stood at 192, a decrease from 293 on the same date last year. The community mourns the loss of a young life cut tragically short.
