City News Reports : A teenager has been arrested and charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of 71-year-old Shahnaz Pestonji. The incident occurred on July 17 as Pestonji was loading groceries into her vehicle at a North York plaza when she was allegedly attacked by a 14-year-old boy in what police describe as an unprovoked assault.
First responders arrived at the scene near Parkway Forest Drive and Sheppard Avenue East shortly after 9:30 a.m. and found Pestonji with stab wounds. She was transported to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The suspect fled the scene, prompting an extensive search by law enforcement.
After several days of investigation, police received judicial authorization to identify the youth by name and photograph. This authorization expired on Sunday, coinciding with the announcement of the boy’s arrest. He now faces a charge of second-degree murder and is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Monday, July 21, 2025.
Toronto police are also aware of videos circulating on social media featuring a masked individual purported to be the suspect discussing the attack. However, the police have not confirmed the identity of the individual in the videos.
