Big Smith News Watch Reports : A 37-year-old Berbice man, Mahendra Paltoo, has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter for the 2022 killing of his wife, Oma Davi Virasammy.
The incident occurred on November 6, 2022, during a domestic dispute at their home, where Paltoo attacked Virasammy with a cutlass, severing an artery in her leg and causing fatal blood loss.
Initially charged with murder, Paltoo accepted a plea deal for manslaughter, which was approved by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Justice Peter Hugh noted that the starting sentence was 21 years but was reduced by one-third for Paltoo’s early plea and mitigating factors. Time served in pre-trial custody will also be deducted from his sentence.
