AFC Hosts Strategic Dialogue with ABC&EU Diplomats Ahead of 2025 Elections

The Alliance For Change (AFC) participated in a high-level meeting with diplomatic representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and the European Union (ABC&EU) at its Centre For Change office in Georgetown on June 16, 2025.

Attendees included U.S. Ambassador Hon. Nicole Theriot, British High Commissioner Hon. Jane Miller, Canadian High Commissioner Hon. Sebastien Sigouin, and EU Ambassador Hon. Rene Van Nes. Representing the AFC were Party Leader C.A. Nigel Hughes, Chairman David Patterson, MP Khemraj Ramjattan, and senior party executives.

The meeting occurred at a pivotal time, as Guyana heads toward national elections on September 1. AFC Leader Nigel Hughes presented the Party’s forward-looking development agenda, receiving strong interest from the visiting diplomats.

A central focus of the discussion was the integrity of the electoral process. The AFC raised serious concerns over ongoing challenges at the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), including the late and unexplained alteration of statutory candidate submission forms—an administrative change that imposes unjustified financial and logistical burdens on political parties, without adjusting the deadlines.

The AFC also expressed alarm at GECOM’s failure to implement most of the recommendations from the 2020 international observer reports. The EU’s final report, which proposed 26 electoral reforms, saw only two implemented in five years. Such inaction, the AFC noted, undermines public trust in the fairness of the process.

The Party emphasized its readiness to work with GECOM toward a credible, free, and transparent election and called for greater responsiveness to formal correspondence sent by political stakeholders.
