Alleged Murder in South Rupununi

News

Police are currently investigating the alleged murder of 27-year-old Assis Joel, a Guyanese Amerindian farmer, which took place on September 26, 2025, around 4:00 PM. The incident occurred in Maruranau Village, located in South Rupununi.

Authorities have arrested two suspects in connection with the case: 20-year-old Hebrew Simon and his 32-year-old brother, Eloyde Simon, both local farmers and residents of the same village.

According to police reports, the victim lived with his common-law wife, Judith Simon, and their three young children, aged 7, 4, and 2, in a modest wooden and concrete house. On the morning of the incident, the Simon brothers visited their sister to celebrate the second birthday of her child. The trio began consuming local wine, known as Kari, under a fruit tree approximately 70 feet from the victim’s home.

At approximately 4:00 PM, after the wine had been consumed, Judith Simon approached her husband under the tree to escort him home. She asked her brothers to leave, but they approached the victim’s home, requesting to borrow his motorcycle. When Joel refused, an argument broke out between the men, escalating into a physical confrontation.

Judith Simon reported that during the altercation, one of her brothers allegedly stabbed Joel with a kitchen knife, breaking off the handle in the process. The weapon was subsequently found discarded in front of the house, and both suspects fled the scene.

Shortly after the incident, around 6:00 PM, Eloyde Simon was apprehended by Community Policing Group (CPG) members in the village and later handed over to the police. A team of officers then located Hebrew Simon at his home and took him into custody.

Both suspects have undergone video and audio interviews, during which they reportedly confessed to the crime. Authorities are in the process of arranging a post-mortem examination to gather further evidence and seek legal advice.

The investigation is ongoing, and police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward.
