As political parties outline their plans for various sectors in anticipation of the upcoming elections, the Alliance for Change (AFC) has released its Education policy titled “Fostering Innovation and Resilience in Guyana’s Education System.” This policy aims to tackle significant challenges facing the education sector, including low pass rates in key examinations and disparities related to geography, socio-economic status, ethnicity, and class.

The AFC has pledged to implement interactive, digital learning tools within the first five years of an AFC government. The party plans to reduce unnecessary subjects, concentrate on essential skills, and establish a skills training institute to equip students with technical and vocational skills, providing stipends and start-up tools upon completion.
Investment in teachers is a key component of the policy, with plans to hire more school psychologists and social workers, alongside salary increases for educators. In a longer-term vision spanning six to ten years, the AFC aims to double teachers’ salaries and ensure that all teachers are licensed and certified to meet higher standards.
Further proposals include upgrading the University of Guyana, incorporating ethnic studies to celebrate diversity, and overhauling the education infrastructure. The AFC emphasizes the importance of digital tools and e-learning, positioning digitization as a primary objective in schools.
The party also commits to updating the curriculum regularly to ensure relevance and competitiveness for Guyanese students. The AFC states that its comprehensive strategy is designed to create an equitable, innovative education system that responds to the needs of a rapidly changing world, fostering a modern Guyana that excels in education and development for the benefit of all citizens.
