ALP Calls for Urgent Action Amid Rising Violence Against Women and Missing Children

News

The Assembly for Liberty and Prosperity (ALP) has raised alarm over the escalating violence against women and the troubling surge in reports of missing children across the country. Families continue to endure profound anguish, left with little clarity or answers regarding the status of these distressing cases.

While general statements of condemnation from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security have been welcomed, the ALP asserts that these responses are wholly inadequate. Without timely data and case updates, there can be no meaningful accountability or assurance that victims are being adequately protected.

The recent enactment of the Family Violence Act 2024 was intended to safeguard women and children, yet the ALP emphasizes the need for its enforcement rather than mere citation. According to the Ministry’s own reports, over 300 cases of sexual abuse are documented each month in Guyana, highlighting the critical need for transparency and proactive measures.

In a bid to restore public trust and ensure the protection of vulnerable citizens, the ALP has outlined several urgent actions for the Ministry:

  • Release complete, updated statistics on violence, abuse against women and girls, and missing children.
  • Provide case-specific updates where appropriate, to inform and reassure affected families.
  • Establish a public register of convicted rapists and sexual predators.
  • Publish detailed, accessible reports on convictions and sentencing, allowing the public to witness justice being served.
  • Demonstrate the implementation of the Family Violence Act 2024, ensuring that victims are protected and further harm is prevented.

“No woman or child in Guyana should be left unprotected, unheard, or without answers,” stated an ALP representative. The party is urging immediate, transparent action to guarantee justice, protection, and peace of mind for all Guyanese citizens.

As the nation grapples with these pressing issues, the ALP continues to advocate for a safer environment for women and children, emphasizing the need for accountability and proactive measures to combat violence and protect the vulnerable.
