APNU Coalition Critiques Irfaan Ali’s Poverty Reduction Presentation

  • News

The APNU Coalition has responded sharply to President Irfaan Ali’s recent Facebook presentation on poverty reduction, delivered on July 27, 2025. The coalition characterized Ali’s proposals as a rehash of failed approaches, lacking a credible development plan with specific targets and indicators for improving quality of life.

In their statement, the APNU Coalition criticized the presentation for failing to address ongoing issues of corruption, financial mismanagement, and government incompetence, which they claim have squandered hundreds of billions of dollars in oil revenues. “As most Guyanese can attest, the last five years under the PPP have resulted in worsening living standards and a growing tide of despair among citizens,” the statement read.

The coalition outlined its own people-centered development strategy, pledging to eliminate poverty and enhance living standards within their first term. Key elements of their plan include:

Ensuring all households receive a livable income

Guaranteeing a living wage for all workers

Implementing cash transfers, public assistance, and school vouchers

Reducing personal income taxes to zero or low rates

Providing subsidies for utilities, rent, and cooking gas

Increasing returns for business owners, from micro to large enterprises

The APNU Coalition argues that these measures will create a dynamic, demand-driven economy, fostering sustainable opportunities for all Guyanese.

They also emphasized the importance of establishing a comprehensive social protection system and delivering top-class social services. The coalition aims to promote equity, social justice, and good governance, while meeting the UN Sustainable Development Goals. To support these efforts, they plan to expand the Bureau of Statistics to produce data that will guide policy formulation and measure progress effectively.

The coalition concluded by asserting that Guyanese have grown weary of the PPP’s leadership and that no amount of rhetoric from Irfaan Ali can prevent their defeat in the upcoming elections on September 1.
