APNU Coalition Demands Immediate Release of “Baby Skello”

The APNU Coalition has joined the growing public outcry following the court’s decision to remand Daniel Wharton, known as “Baby Skello,” on charges of blasphemous libel. The coalition is calling for his immediate release, emphasizing the need for justice and the protection of democratic freedoms.

Wharton’s remand comes amid increasing concerns regarding the PPP government’s use of repressive tactics to suppress fundamental freedoms of expression, conscience, association, and peaceful assembly. Critics argue that the government has, for example, misused anti-terrorism laws to address ordinary criminal activities, such as looting, and has targeted social media critics living abroad.

In a statement, the APNU Coalition expressed discontent over the reactions of Minister Manickchand and other PPP leaders regarding the remand. They asserted that if these leaders were genuinely concerned, they should advocate for an end to the government’s repeated violations of human and democratic rights.

The coalition clarified its stance, stating, “We do not condone or encourage acts that willfully offend any group based on their religious beliefs.” They noted that Wharton has since issued an apology, arguing that his remand is disproportionate and poses a threat to basic freedoms.

The APNU Coalition urges all Guyanese to raise their voices in condemnation of this decision. “Release Baby Skello now!” they declared, calling for a united stand against government overreach and the erosion of civil liberties.
