The Opposition, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU), has expressed serious concerns regarding a planned visit by Natural Resources Minister Vickram Bharrat to the South Rupununi, where he intends to seek approval from Toshaos for a lease that would allow expanded gold mining activities in the Marudi Mountain area.

During a press conference held this morning, APNU Member of Parliament Ganesh Mahipaul highlighted growing unease among community members. He noted that many residents are opposed to mining in the Marudi region and fear that Toshaos may face pressure or coercion to support an agreement that does not align with their communities’ interests.
“There is a strong sentiment that any attempt to impose or advance such an agreement without genuine consultation and consent would be unacceptable,” Mahipaul stated.
The MP further pointed out that small miners would also be adversely affected by the government’s potential actions. “The small miners are complaining bitterly that they are being left behind and that their needs are not being addressed. The Ministry of Natural Resources seems uninterested in addressing their plight as they struggle to make ends meet,” he added.
Mahipaul emphasized the importance of respecting the rights of the South Rupununi residents to protect their livelihoods, lands, and future. He criticized the government for prioritizing profit over community welfare. “We are calling on Minister Vickram Bharrat to be more lenient and cautious in his operations and to consider the small miners of Guyana. They too have a right to build their businesses and secure their futures,” he urged.
The APNU has firmly positioned itself that any engagement with the South Rupununi District Council must be conducted transparently and respectfully, free from undue influence.
Further emphasizing these concerns, Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed echoed the sentiment, alleging that the government’s actions aim to open more mining lands to individuals close to the administration. He called for an immediate halt to any leasing of land in the Marudi area to protect the rights and interests of the local communities.
