Athletics Association of Guyana Concludes 2025 National Senior Championships

The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) wrapped up its 2025 National Senior Championships on Sunday, following three days of intense competition at the National Track and Field Centre. The event showcased a blend of established talent and emerging athletes, culminating in several impressive performances.

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) emerged as the dominant force, securing numerous titles across both track and field events. One of the highlights of the final day was the men’s 200m, where Shamar Horatio led a clean sweep for GDF, clocking an impressive 20.72 seconds. His teammates Akeem Stewart (20.94s) and Ezekiel Newton (20.96s) followed closely behind, underscoring GDF’s strength in sprinting.

Middle-distance specialist Simeon Adams also shone, winning the men’s 800m in 1:52.20. He later teamed up with Kenisha Phillips, Joshua Lam, and Keliza Smith to secure victory for GDF in the mixed 4x400m relay with a time of 3:32.31.

In field events, Leslain Baird added another gold for GDF in the men’s javelin with a winning throw of 70.35m. Meanwhile, in the long jump, Police Progressive’s Emmanuel Archibald claimed gold with a spectacular leap of 7.96m, while GDF’s Micai Washington took silver with a jump of 7.53m.

Annalisa Redmond won the women’s long jump for Police, jumping 5.93m, while Aaliyah Moore secured gold in the women’s 800m, finishing in 2:02.69.

GDF’s female athletes also showcased their talent, with Keliza Smith triumphing in the women’s 200m in 23.70 seconds, ahead of teammate Kenisha Phillips (24.00s) and Police’s Tianna Springer (24.02s). Smith contributed to GDF’s success in the mixed 4x400m relay as well. Anisha Gibbons also added another gold for GDF with a commanding throw of 46.40m in the women’s javelin.

Earlier in the championships, Emmanuel Archibald (Police Progressive) delivered a blistering, wind-assisted 9.98 seconds (+2.4 m/s) to win the men’s 100m final, ahead of GDF’s Akeem Stewart (10.11s) and Ezekiel Newton (10.21s). Tianna Springer continued her impressive form by clinching gold in the women’s 100m in 11.52s.

GDF’s Simeon Adams secured the men’s 400m title in 48.70s, while Aliyah Abrams cruised to victory in the women’s 400m with a time of 53.73s.

The opening day saw Jelesa Wright (GDF) win the women’s 5000m in 20:33.50, and GDF’s Odida Parkinson take the men’s 5000m title in 16:16.15. In the shot put, GDF’s Jemaine Simmons dominated with a throw of 16.61m, while Shonette Freeman (Police Progressive) won the women’s shot put with 10.77m.

In the triple jump, Natricia Hooper (GDF) took gold in the women’s event with a leap of 13.74m, and Stefon Roach (Mercury Fast Laners) won the men’s title with a jump of 15.90m.

Other notable performances included Odida Parkinson’s hard-fought victory in the men’s 10,000m, edging out Police’s Royston Fordyce. Police athletes Eron Leitch and Gabriel Lim secured silver and bronze in the men’s javelin.

The AAG commended all athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators for their contributions to a successful and competitive National Senior Championships.
