Attorney General Accuses Opposition of Political Manipulation Over Extrajudicial Killings

  • News

News Source Guyana Reports : Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall, has voiced concerns regarding ongoing attempts to associate the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) with extrajudicial killings in Guyana. He believes these efforts aim to discredit the party and sway public opinion ahead of the upcoming elections.

During a recent Emancipation Day celebration, APNU Presidential Candidate Aubrey Norton announced that if his party were to take government, a comprehensive investigation into extrajudicial killings dating back to the early 2000s would be initiated. This period saw a significant crime wave, during which a sitting government minister was also killed, yet no thorough investigation was conducted.

In his weekly “Issues In the News” program, Nandlall criticized Norton’s statements, suggesting they were a strategy to garner support. He recalled that a similar promise was made in 2015 by the opposition coalition, which ultimately led to no inquiries being undertaken.

“Granger himself as President was asked frontally about this long line of extrajudicial killings that they spoke about when they were in Opposition. Here it is, four years into his government he is admitting that there is no evidence of these same killings that they are now again promising to reopen,” Nandlall stated, expressing frustration over what he termed “duplicity and deceit.”

The Attorney General noted that violence surged in various communities following a significant jail break in February 2002, with both the PPP and the PNC blaming each other for the ensuing chaos and killings. The PPP was in power at that time, and police were accused of terrorizing and unlawfully killing individuals in certain villages.

These issues played a crucial role in the 2015 election campaign. Nandlall emphasized that the PPP is open to investigations and expressed his anticipation for inquiries into the murder of political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing. He remarked on the relentless attempts to implicate the PPP in Crum-Ewing’s killing, indicating that he had publicly called for an inquiry, which was never conducted.

According to Nandlall, it has become a pattern for individuals to quickly blame the PPP government every time a high-profile killing occurs.
