Attorney General Anil Nandlall Criticizes Opposition’s “Outlandish” Campaign Promises

  • News

Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall has accused opposition parties of making unrealistic campaign promises aimed at manipulating voters ahead of Guyana’s upcoming general elections. In his regular Tuesday night commentary, he branded these pledges as deceptive tricks.

Nandlall stated that the opposition lacks both the record and capacity to deliver on their ambitious proposals. “They know they’re not going to be in government, so they promise everything under the sun,” he remarked, emphasizing that historical patterns show they never follow through on such commitments.

As the election campaign gains momentum, he noted that voters are inundated with promises of free house lots, expanded school feeding programs, and large cash grants, all of which he dismissed as unrealistic and unsustainable.

Nandlall criticized one presidential candidate’s promise of a free house lot for every citizen turning 18, labeling it a “credit card trick” without a viable funding or implementation plan. He pointed out that the APNU/AFC coalition, during its tenure from 2015 to 2020, failed to develop any new housing schemes, instead handing out 7,000 lots from previous PPP/C initiatives, primarily benefiting their friends and family.

In contrast, Nandlall highlighted the PPP/C’s achievements, noting that the government has distributed 50,000 house lots in just five years, with the latest title handed over recently.

The Attorney General also criticized the opposition for now pledging school cash grants and free meals, which they previously dismantled during their last term in office. “They abolished the cash grant, the school feeding, and uniform programs. Now they’re back, promising what they themselves destroyed,” he stated.

He characterized the opposition’s current promises as “grand and fanciful,” emphasizing that they are made with the knowledge that they won’t be elected. Nandlall argued that their focus is on winning votes through deception rather than genuine nation-building.

Nandlall urged voters to reflect on the past and demand accountability from political parties. He asserted that the PPP has maintained a reputation for delivering on its promises, stating, “We will never make promises we can’t fulfill.”

He also took aim at Opposition Leader Aubrey Norton, accusing him of disrespecting Guyanese voters by suggesting a large portion of the population is illiterate, implying that Norton believes he can manipulate public perception.

As the elections approach, Nandlall warned that the opposition is already laying the groundwork to dispute the election results. “When the people reject them, they’ll say they were robbed, blame the voters list, and blame the PPP,” he predicted.

Concluding his remarks, he emphasized that the opposition lacks originality and credibility, and urged voters to be discerning in their choices. “You can’t copy PPP programs, raise the numbers, and call it a plan. There’s no originality, no credibility, just empty promises and political theatre,” he concluded.
