  • News

The Bath Regional Hospital was officially opened on Wednesday by President Dr. Irfaan Ali, marking a significant advancement in healthcare facilities for the region. The new hospital boasts a range of modern amenities, including a CT scanning machine, three surgical theatres, two dialysis units, a medical imaging room, a 24-hour pharmacy and laboratory, a 24-hour accident and emergency unit, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), and an oxygen plant.

Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the hospital’s capabilities during the opening ceremony, noting that it is equipped with 75 in-patient beds, modern bathrooms, a birthing suite, and a step-down unit for patients who are severely ill but not critical. “We have three brand new operating theatres with the necessary equipment for elective, emergency, and orthopedic surgeries,” he stated.

Previously, residents relied on the Mahaicony District Hospital and Fort Wellington Hospital, both of which struggled with limited space and outdated equipment.

In addition to the new hospital, Dr. Anthony mentioned the government’s commitment to primary healthcare in the region, with the establishment of four new health centres, increasing the total from 15 to 19. Programs addressing diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases have also been introduced.

President Ali emphasized the government’s efforts to improve health services across the country, mentioning that 26 health centres and 12 new hospitals have been completed in the past five years. “This facility is a testament to a government that is developing our country to remove inequality and improve services,” he noted.

The hospital also features a neonatal care unit and specialized eyecare services for all ages.

President Ali spoke about ongoing investments in the health sector, including training more health workers, increasing salaries, and ensuring a steady supply of medical resources. He urged healthcare professionals at the new facility to provide diligent service, emphasizing, “We are making too much investment to accept any level of service that is below par.”

The President also mentioned plans for a National Health Information System and a Patient Management Information System aimed at addressing primary health issues effectively. These initiatives will be complemented by an integrated laboratory service to maintain accurate medical records and promote a healthier population.

The opening of the Bath Regional Hospital represents a significant step forward in the provision of healthcare services in Region Five, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving health outcomes for all Guyanese.
