Competitive chess is returning to Berbice with a one-day 20/20 Rapid Chess Tournament organized by the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) on Sunday, August 24.

The event, held at the Little Rock Suites Conference Hall in New Amsterdam, is open to all local players and aims to revive interest in the game. Each player will have 20 minutes to complete their moves in a seven-round Swiss System competition.
New Amsterdam player Steve Leung noted the challenges of quick play, particularly in the endgame, where time pressure can lead to costly mistakes.
Registration is free, and the top three finishers will receive trophies and cash prizes, with a special award for the best female player. Interested participants must register online at the GCF’s website, guyanachess.gy, by Thursday, August 21.
