Bilateral Trade Between Guyana and the US Surpasses $4.7 Billion

Bilateral trade between Guyana and the United States has reached a record high of over $4.7 billion in the past year, reflecting the strengthening economic ties between the two nations. This announcement was made by US Ambassador to Guyana, Nicole Theriot, during the 249th US Independence Day celebration at her official residence.

Ambassador Theriot highlighted the milestone, stating, “The number of U.S. companies working with Guyanese partners continues to grow, along with sustained investment across many sectors.” She noted numerous new ventures that have emerged since last year’s event, including company launches and significant partnerships.

Guyana’s President, Dr. Irfaan Ali, praised the expanding trade relationship and emphasized the nation’s commitment to diversifying trade and improving market accessibility in key sectors such as agriculture, technology, and infrastructure. “We continue to be optimistic about the diversification of our trade relations,” he said, underscoring efforts to boost domestic food production and reduce import dependence.

The partnership between Guyana and the US spans over five decades, focusing on capacity building across various sectors, including combating transnational crime and modernizing agriculture. Ambassador Theriot described the collaboration as “far beyond mere words,” highlighting significant growth in military, security, and law enforcement cooperation.

She noted that Guyana’s military and security collaboration is currently at its strongest level, citing successful joint operations between the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) and Guyana’s Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, which resulted in the seizure of thousands of kilograms of illegal drugs last year.

President Ali addressed the issue of gold smuggling, pledging to allocate resources to combat this illicit activity, which he warned could empower undemocratic forces. “We are putting enormous resources into ensuring that the threat of illicit gold smuggling is uprooted with our partnership,” he stated.

As Guyana prepares for its upcoming General and Regional Elections on September 1, President Ali reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a peaceful and stable region. He welcomed US support in ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process, emphasizing the importance of democracy in the nation’s future.

In summary, the growing economic relationship between Guyana and the US not only highlights robust trade figures but also reflects a commitment to collaboration in various sectors, ensuring a secure and democratic future for both nations.
