Smith had been reported missing just days before his body was found. His family grew alarmed after receiving a phone call from an unidentified individual demanding a ransom of $9 million for his safe return. Unable to meet the demand, the family’s fears were confirmed when they learned of his death.
The family expressed their distress over the murder and frustration with the lack of updates from the police regarding the investigation.
Smith had worked as a ramp attendant at Cheddi Jagan International Airport but had stopped working just two weeks prior to his disappearance. A senior law enforcement source indicated that investigators suspect the kidnapping and murder may be connected to a drug trafficking operation, potentially involving an attempt to smuggle cocaine onto an international flight.
