Alfred De Jonge, the boyfriend of 22-year-old Stacy Walton, has been charged with manslaughter just days after her tragic death. De Jonge appeared at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday morning, where he was granted bail in the amount of $1 million.

Walton died on Friday, June 20, initially believed to be the result of a road accident on the No.7 Public Road, East Berbice. However, investigators later uncovered discrepancies in De Jonge’s account of the events leading to her death.
According to police reports, Walton was driving De Jonge’s car, registered as PAG 2279, while under the influence of alcohol. She was heading west on the southern lane when she reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which ended up in a trench. Despite being rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival. A post-mortem examination revealed that Walton died from asphyxia and drowning.
Further investigations revealed a more complex narrative. On the night of the incident, De Jonge allegedly picked Walton up from her home, and the couple went to acquire a quantity of cannabis. While waiting for the supplier, an argument erupted over De Jonge’s supposed infidelity.
After obtaining the drugs, they continued their journey, but De Jonge claimed that the argument resumed while Walton was driving. He stated that during this altercation, the vehicle veered off the road and plunged into the trench. De Jonge later admitted that as the vehicle submerged, he attempted to remove the cannabis through the front right window, inadvertently causing Walton to drown.
After exiting the vehicle with the drugs, De Jonge hid them nearby and left the scene. He later returned to retrieve Walton and contacted the police, initially providing a false account of the accident.
Walton’s family has expressed serious doubts about the official narrative. Her father, Raoul Walton, called for a thorough investigation, noting suspicious injuries on his daughter’s body. “There are bruises on Stacy’s back, on her side; it looks like she had a puncture,” he stated. “This is not drowning; this is murder.”
Raoul emphasized their determination to seek justice, saying, “We need justice for our child, and we are going to go all out to make sure this is possible.”
Stacy’s mother, Kate Walton, echoed her husband’s sentiments, revealing that Stacy had recently confided in her about experiencing abuse from her ex-partner. “I would like to have justice for my daughter because it’s not easy for the parents and brothers going through this,” she said.
As the investigation continues, the family remains resolute in their quest for truth and accountability.
