Call for Establishment of Human Rights Commission in Guyana- Nigel Hughes

Nigel Hughes, Leader of the AFC , has raised concerns regarding the absence of a Human Rights Commission in Guyana, despite its provision in the Constitution. Following the Constitution Review process in 2001, Article 212 N was introduced to establish this crucial body, yet 24 years later, it remains non-existent.

Hughes highlighted that the international covenant and treaty rights outlined under Article 154 A were intended to directly confer rights to citizens. However, these rights have remained unenforceable due to the lack of a functioning Human Rights Commission.

“The Constitution flatters to deceive,” Hughes stated, emphasizing the need for a commission that would ensure the enforcement of progressive rights and benefits for all citizens. He pointed out that without this commission, the rights introduced through international treaties have been effectively meaningless for over two decades.

In light of these issues, Hughes called for the establishment of a Human Rights Commission, asserting that in the New Republic, such a commission is mandatory for upholding citizens’ rights. He pledged that an AFC administration would prioritize the immediate establishment of the Human Rights Commission to protect and promote human rights in Guyana.
