CANU to Tackle Foreign Drug Trafficker Presence in Guyana

  • News

News Source Guyana Reports : James Singh, Director of the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), has expressed concerns about foreign drug traffickers attempting to establish a presence in Guyana. Speaking on the “Securing the Nation” podcast, he emphasized that CANU and law enforcement will confront these efforts.

Singh highlighted the influx of new synthetic drugs from Europe and high-THC marijuana from North America, Colombia, Venezuela, and Thailand. He noted that many drugs enter Guyana from Venezuela by air and sea, often destined for West Africa and Europe.

To combat these threats, CANU is seeking greater international cooperation and the presence of more foreign liaison officers. Singh pointed out that drug traffickers are evolving their concealment methods, complicating enforcement efforts.

Despite the challenges, CANU has successfully seized significant amounts of cocaine and collaborated with international partners, including the DEA and agencies from the US, France, Colombia, and Suriname. Singh stressed the importance of partnerships in preventing Guyana from becoming a narco-state, especially in light of recent threats against his life linked to foreign drug trafficking networks.
