News Source Guyana Reports : The Carter Center, monitoring Guyana’s upcoming elections, has expressed concern about local banks potentially over-compliance with U.S. sanctions leading to the closure of accounts for candidates of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party. This action, the Center argues, undermines political participation and electoral integrity.

Following the approval of WIN’s candidate list, three banks reportedly closed accounts for around 40 WIN candidates and their associates, citing fears of secondary sanctions. The Carter Center emphasizes that mere political association should not justify account terminations without evidence of prohibited transactions.
Additionally, the Center noted that the WIN presidential candidate has been denied airline service for campaign flights and access to public areas for meetings, raising concerns about equal rights to freedom of association.
The report also highlighted allegations of state resource misuse by the ruling party during the campaign, including biased media coverage and government officials appearing in party attire during public announcements. While acknowledging generally peaceful campaigning, the Center warned these practices could create an unfair advantage for the ruling party.
