Citibank Interested in Establishing Operations in Guyana

News

President Dr. Irfaan Ali announced that Citibank is considering setting up operations in Guyana, underscoring the growing confidence in the local financial sector. Speaking to supporters at Alexander Village, Georgetown, he expressed pride in the trust foreign banks are placing in Guyana’s financial system.

Dr. Ali indicated that Citibank may soon establish a representative office in the country, linking this potential move to positive developments in the financial landscape. “They trust the financial system, they trust our policies… There is only one party that can do this. That is your party, the PPP/C,” he stated.

During the meeting, he highlighted government efforts to incentivize foreign banks to forge relationships in Guyana. Last year, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo noted the significance of discussions with Citibank in light of the challenges small countries face in attracting major international banks. He emphasized the government’s goal of enhancing the local financial sector and expressed hopes for increased retail banking options from large banks, acknowledging the trend of international banks exiting the region due to changing global risks.
