Trinidad Express Reports : A Claxton Bay woman has tragically died after suffering extensive burns in a suspected gas explosion at her home. Racquel Babwah, 44, of Mt Pleasant Road, Springvale Village, was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the San Fernando General Hospital on June 19, one day after the incident, with burns covering 60% of her body.

Despite fighting for her life for just over five days, Babwah succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday, June 24. According to police reports, she arrived at the hospital around 6 PM on June 19 in an emergency health services vehicle, accompanied by a male relative. The explosion reportedly occurred around 11 PM on June 18.
Cpl Ramdeen and PC Seemungal of the Couva Police were the first responders to the report. They attempted to visit the victim’s home to investigate the scene but were unable to make contact with anyone present. They later visited the hospital, where medical staff confirmed Babwah’s critical condition; however, she could not be interviewed due to heavy sedation, and no medical report was available at that time.
Following her death, police returned to the victim’s residence on June 24, accompanied by crime scene investigators WPC Davis and PC George. There, they met Babwah’s common-law husband, 44, who had burn injuries to both hands and his left foot and reported he had been hospitalized for two days following the explosion.
Crime scene investigators processed the scene and seized a bulb camera. A statement was taken from the common-law husband, and police consulted Dr. Yearwood from the ICU, who confirmed the time of death and mentioned that a referral letter for a post-mortem examination had been prepared.
Police also interviewed neighbors but received no useful information. Cpl Ramdeen is continuing the investigation.
