Commissioning of Diamond Regional Hospital

– Marks Milestone in Guyana’s Healthcare Expansion

Today, Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) the Honourable Mark Phillips and Mrs. Mignon Bowen-Phillips joined His Excellency President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali at the commissioning of the Diamond Regional Hospital. This facility is the first of six state-of-the-art regional hospitals being constructed across Guyana.

The new 75-bed hospital will provide quality healthcare services to approximately 40,000 residents in the East Bank Demerara corridor. Key features include a 24-hour Accident and Emergency Unit, digital X-ray and CT scan services, two operating theatres, fully equipped laboratories, outpatient clinics, and a neonatal unit.

Constructed by Sinopharm International, the Diamond Regional Hospital is a cornerstone of the Government’s national healthcare expansion programme. As a fully equipped, green, and innovative facility, it represents a significant investment in decentralizing health services and delivering high-quality care to communities outside of Georgetown.

Designed with modern technologies such as digital diagnostics and enhanced patient flow, the hospital serves as a flagship initiative aimed at strengthening national healthcare and improving equitable access to both specialized and general medical services.

The event was attended by Vice President the Honourable Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, Minister of Health the Honourable Dr. Frank Anthony, Senior Minister in the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance and Public Service the Honourable Dr. Ashni Singh, along with other Cabinet members, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the private sector and civil society, and senior government officials.
