Relatives of Jerome Bernard, a 31-year-old teacher and livestock farmer, are urging the government to take immediate action to address the issue of stray animals on roadways following a tragic accident that claimed his life.

Brenda Lewis, Bernard’s aunt, expressed her concerns to reporters, emphasizing the need for authorities to implement measures that prevent animals from wandering onto busy roads. “Jerome always made sure his own animals were secured day and night to avoid accidents,” she remarked.
Brenda also highlighted the dangers posed by derelict vehicles parking along road shoulders. “If a cattle runs across the road from behind a derelict vehicle, it can cause an accident,” she warned, calling on the government and relevant authorities to clear these vehicles from public thoroughfares.
Jerome’s mother, Kim Lewis, overwhelmed with grief, was unable to speak with the media. Brenda shared the profound impact of the loss on his mother, stating, “He was her only child. Losing an only child is very, very hard for her. It’s hard for me, and it’s not my son.”
Describing Jerome as a dedicated educator with a love for sports and a commitment to his students, Brenda noted his passion for nurturing young minds. “He always took the children out for school activities, driving them often. This fateful day was very tragic. He took them out Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday,” she said.
According to reports, the accident occurred when a horse ran in front of the bus he was driving. Brenda explained, “He tried to avoid colliding with it, but it didn’t happen.”
She also commended the emergency response teams at Number 75 and Georgetown Public Hospitals for their efforts in trying to save her nephew’s life.
The incident also claimed the life of 16-year-old Jodea Seline from Limlair Village, who was pronounced dead at No. 75 Hospital. Two female passengers remain in critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital, with one suffering from a fractured skull and the other from severe head trauma. Other victims involved in the accident are currently recovering.
As the community mourns this tragic loss, calls for increased road safety measures are growing louder, with families hoping for quicker action to prevent future incidents.
