Vidyanand Datt, a 43-year-old contractor from Ogle Railway Embankment, East Coast Demerara, has been charged with obtaining by false pretence, contrary to Section 194 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 08:01.
Datt’s arrest occurred on October 16, 2025, and he was formally charged on January 9, 2026, in relation to an incident involving 57-year-old Seodat Mootee of Montrose North, East Coast Demerara, which took place in August 2025.
During his appearance at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court #2 on January 9, Magistrate Abigail Gibbs read the charge to Datt. Initially, he pleaded guilty with an explanation; however, after providing his explanation, a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
Datt was granted bail in the amount of $200,000, and the case has been adjourned to March 4, 2026, for further proceedings.
