By News Source Guyana. A tragic murder/suicide incident occurred this morning on Charlotte Street, Georgetown, resulting in the deaths of a couple and critical injuries to their young son.
Atiya Rambachan-Solomon, a 36-year-old employee of ExxonMobil, was shot dead by her estranged husband, Alroy Solomon, who also shot their 10-year-old son before turning the gun on himself. The child survived the attack but is currently hospitalized with serious gunshot wounds.
The incident took place shortly after 11:30 AM. Witnesses reported hearing multiple gunshots, after which Atiya, who was nursing a broken arm from a previous accident, collapsed in front of a building near their home. The injured son was found lying in the yard, while Alroy was discovered dead in the back of the yard from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Emergency services responded quickly to the scene, transporting the young boy to the hospital as the bodies of his parents remained at the property.
Sources indicate that Atiya had recently moved to the area with her son and that the couple was experiencing a tumultuous breakup. Neighbors noted that Alroy was often seen transporting Atiya and their son, despite their strained relationship.
Friends revealed that the couple had faced significant hardships in recent months, including losing their home to a fire and Atiya sustaining injuries in a hit-and-run accident. She was still recovering from her injuries when the tragic incident occurred.
Local residents reported previous gunfire in front of the rented property, suspecting Alroy’s involvement. Sharon Foster, a neighbor, recounted hearing gunshots weeks prior and finding spent shells in the area.
Coel Marks, the brother of the landlord, stated, “There was a clear domestic violence issue taking place at the home. She seemed to have problems with the husband, but they remained cordial.” He confirmed that an investigation into previous shooting incidents at the residence was ongoing.
The area surrounding the home has been cordoned off as authorities conduct a full investigation into this tragic event. Relatives were seen arriving at the scene, visibly shaken by the news.
