Crackdown on Illegal Mining Operations in Guyana

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) have launched a significant crackdown on miners operating without the necessary permits. This initiative aims to seize minerals from illegal operations and close them down effectively.

In an official release today, the Ministry and GGMC stated they are collaborating with the Guyana Police Force to implement a zero-tolerance policy against mining activities that do not meet statutory requirements. This decision follows a recent meeting between President Irfaan Ali and industry stakeholders, where the government signaled its intent to take decisive action against miners who fail to adhere to legal standards and are thereby depriving the state of essential tax revenue.

Recent assessments by the Ministry have revealed that numerous mining operations are illegally active without the required statutory instruments. As a result, officials have already halted operations at several sites and seized their minerals, initiating legal proceedings against the offenders.

“This crackdown is just the beginning; the government intends to extend these operations nationwide to address illegal and illicit activities within the small and medium-scale gold mining sector,” the Ministry stated. They reaffirmed their commitment to protecting natural resources and ensuring that all mining operations comply with local laws.

The Ministry emphasized that this zero-tolerance approach is critical for fostering a fair and sustainable mining industry in Guyana. They also urged all miners to comply with their legal obligations to operate within the established framework, warning that severe penalties await those who do not.

This initiative marks a significant step towards enhancing regulatory compliance in the mining sector and ensuring the sustainable management of the country’s rich natural resources.
