A total of 126 criminal cases are scheduled for trial at the January 2026 session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes, reflecting a significant decline in the number of cases over recent years.

This reduction in caseload signifies improvements in judicial capacity and efficiency within the Guyanese legal system. In January 2023, the Assizes had 308 cases listed with three judges. This number decreased to 259 in January 2024, followed by a further decline to 134 in January 2025. The latest count of 126 cases is being overseen by an expanded panel of four judges.
The positive trend follows the appointment of 10 new puisne judges in June 2024—the largest appointment in the history of Guyana. This expansion has strengthened the High Court’s capacity to handle both civil and criminal cases more effectively.
The continuous reduction in trial numbers highlights the Assizes’ ability to manage a substantial workload while enhancing operational efficiency. This progress is crucial for reducing trial waiting times and ensuring the timely adjudication of serious criminal matters. The GPA emphasizes the importance of effective case management and coordination in achieving these advancements.
