In a significant advancement for community sports and infrastructure, the Ministry of Public Works officially inaugurated Guyana’s inaugural PVC plastic all-weather basketball court in Campbellville yesterday. The project, valued at $39 million, marks not only the introduction of a modern sports venue but also the fulfillment of a promise made by the Government of Guyana to the local residents following the displacement of their previous court during the construction of the Conversation Tree four-lane road project.

Addressing attendees at the commissioning ceremony, Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill highlighted the ministry’s commitment to providing a top-quality replacement for the community. “Cost was secondary. Community satisfaction was number one. We gave the people of Campbellville what they asked for and what they deserved,” Edghill stated, underscoring the project’s community-centered approach.
The newly constructed facility prioritizes safety and durability, featuring an all-weather surface built to international standards. This design is intended to support the development of local athletes and elevate the standard of sporting events in the area.
In addition to the court’s inauguration, the Ministry of Public Works announced its commitment to sponsor a yearly basketball tournament in Campbellville for the next three years. This initiative aims to foster community spirit, identify local talent, and solidify the facility as a key aspect of social life in Campbellville.
Residents are optimistic about the potential impact of the new court, seeing it as a vital resource for enhancing community engagement and promoting healthy lifestyles among youth. The court’s opening marks a new era for sports in Campbellville, highlighting the government’s dedication to fulfilling its promises to the community.
