Albion Estate, Berbice — General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, addressed hundreds of supporters on Sunday, unveiling ambitious plans for Region Six should the PPP/C be re-elected. Key proposals include the construction of a four-lane road from Moleson Creek to New Amsterdam and a toll-free four-lane bridge across the Berbice River.

During the rally held at Albion Estate Road, Jagdeo criticized the opposition, specifically the A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the Alliance For Change (AFC), for their failure to deliver on promises made during their time in office from 2015 to 2020. He stated, “Their supporters, as well as ours, recognize that the PNC—no matter what they promise—will never deliver.”
Jagdeo highlighted a trend of neglect toward Region Six by the previous government, pointing to the closure of several sugar estates and budget cuts that adversely affected the region. He referenced a recent statement made by an opposition speaker about shutting down the sugar industry to promote marijuana cultivation, emphasizing that such sentiments have resurfaced.
“The people did not believe us in 2015, but now they are saying it again,” he remarked, recalling the impacts of the APNU+AFC government, which led to the closure of the Rose Hall, Skeldon, Wales, and Enmore sugar estates, resulting in the loss of over 7,500 jobs and economic instability in the region.
In contrast, Jagdeo highlighted the PPP/C’s achievements, including improving access to healthcare, providing training opportunities, and employing part-time workers. He asserted that without the PPP/C in office, Berbice would have been neglected, citing what he referred to as “institutional discrimination” against the region.
Jagdeo also paid tribute to the party’s founder, Dr. Cheddi Jagan, who hailed from Region Six, expressing pride in the unity and strength of the party. “I am sure that if he is looking down upon us today, he will be extremely proud of how his party has grown,” he said.
In closing, Dr. Jagdeo committed to working towards reducing the cost of living for all residents, reinforcing the PPP/C’s dedication to the progress of Region Six.
