It is with profound sorrow that I share the news of the passing of Michael Khan, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). His death leaves a significant void in our society and in the hearts of many.

For nearly sixteen years, Mike thoughtfully led GPHC through challenges amid scarce resources. His tenure was marked by notable achievements, including the physical expansion of wards, the historic introduction of kidney transplants and cardiac services, and a courageous transition towards institutional autonomy. He not only professionalized the systems within the hospital but also laid the foundation for Guyana’s specialist training programs.
Michael brought an extraordinary ethic of humane service to his role as a healthcare professional. For him, service was personal; he viewed each patient as an individual deserving care and went above and beyond to assist those in need. His kindness, generosity, and unwavering support made a lasting impact on our public healthcare system.
It is tragic that the country he dedicated his life to serving inflicted a wound from which he never recovered. The unjust termination of his service separated him from the institution that was his family and his life’s work.
Today, we mourn the loss of an exemplary public servant. While his light has been extinguished, the pathways he forged will continue to illuminate the way toward a more compassionate and capable healthcare system.
On behalf of a grateful nation, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his daughters, relatives, and friends during this difficult time. May he rest in eternal splendor.
