Drug Bust: Over 2,400 Grams of Marijuana Found Near Mazaruni Prison

In a significant drug bust, authorities discovered 2,432.8 grams of marijuana near the Mazaruni Prison on Sunday morning. The discovery was made following a tip-off received by the Officer-in-Charge of the prison.

At approximately 10:30 AM, the Officer-in-Charge received a call from an unknown source, who alleged that narcotics had been dropped off in the Solar Farm area within the prison compound, intending to smuggle them into the facility. Acting swiftly, the Officer instructed a Prison Officer to investigate the area.

Between 10:35 AM and 11:15 AM, the Prison Officer searched the vicinity and located two bulky, multi-colored ‘Bob Marley’ haversacks about one hundred feet west of the Solar Farm. Upon inspection, the bags contained fourteen parcels filled with leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The Prison Officer immediately reported the findings to his superior, who then contacted the Bartica Police Station. Police units arrived at the scene and conducted a thorough search of the bags, uncovering a total of seventeen parcels of the suspected cannabis. Additionally, two pairs of slippers with unusually bulky soles were found, which contained four transparent parcels of the same substance.

The cannabis was weighed in the presence of the Prison Officer, confirming a total of 2,432.8 grams. The evidence was subsequently secured in a transparent evidence bag, sealed, marked, and lodged at the Bartica Police Station.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the origin of the drugs and the individuals involved in the attempted smuggling operation. Statements have been collected, and further inquiries are underway to uncover more details surrounding this incident.
