Ecstasy and Foreign Marijuana Flooding Guyana, Warns CANU

  • News

The Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) has issued a warning about increasing drug trafficking in Guyana, highlighting an influx of foreign marijuana and ecstasy.

CANU Head James Singh reported that ecstasy shipments are arriving from Europe and being routed to South America, while marijuana is trafficked from North America, Colombia, Venezuela, and Thailand. Traffickers are using more sophisticated methods, contaminating legitimate shipments after they’ve been scanned and cleared.

Singh noted that drug cartels are embedding themselves in Guyana, indicating a desire to establish a presence. To combat these threats, CANU is enhancing international partnerships, increasing the number of foreign liaison officers, and deploying advanced detection technologies.

“We are adapting to ensure Guyana does not become a narco state,” Singh emphasized.
