The election of Guyana’s next Leader of the Opposition is set for Monday, January 26, as announced by Speaker of the National Assembly Manzoor Nadir during a live broadcast on the National Communications Network (NCN) on Tuesday night.

Speaker Nadir instructed the Clerk to convene a meeting with Opposition Members of Parliament ahead of the National Budget presentation, marking a significant step towards formally establishing the opposition leadership within the 13th Parliament.
This development follows the convening of the 13th Parliament on November 3, 2025, where Speaker Nadir administered the oath of office to opposition members. However, subsequent sittings were not held as the Speaker was engaged in official duties abroad, returning to Guyana only recently.
Earlier on Tuesday, presumed Leader of the Opposition Azruddin Mohamed, leader of the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party, along with other parliamentarians, sought an audience with Speaker Nadir at the Parliament Office, but the meeting did not occur. This led to protest actions by WIN representatives outside the Speaker’s residence later that night.
The WIN party holds a decisive position, having secured 16 of the 29 non-government seats, making Mohamed the frontrunner for the position of Leader of the Opposition. The election is viewed as a crucial constitutional requirement to restore full functionality to Parliament, especially as the government prepares to present Budget 2026 and address additional legislative matters.
