News

News Source Guyana Reports | Staff members at Stabroek News gathered in heartbreak and uncertainty today after being informed that the newspaper will cease all operations on March 15, 2026. With nearly 40 years of service as a leading independent media entity in Guyana, the closure reflects significant shifts in the media landscape and declining advertising revenue.

Following a management meeting at the newspaper’s Robb Street location, Senior Journalists Samantha Alleyne-Williams and Marcelle Fowler expressed their shock and dismay.

Ms. Alleyne-Williams, who has dedicated nearly three decades to the publication, shared her struggle to process the news. “I never imagined that it would have been this abrupt. I learned so much working here, and I have shed tears knowing this chapter is ending,” she said.

The newspaper currently employs 60 full-time staff members, along with contracted workers and vendors, all of whom are now facing an uncertain future.

Senior Journalist Marcelle Fowler emphasized the impact of the closure on younger journalists who were beginning to establish their careers. “I empathize with their situation; many are looking for guidance on their next move,” she stated. Fowler highlighted the changing media environment, noting a growing preference for social media among readers.

“The burden now falls on the media to uphold the standards that Stabroek News has maintained,” she added, recognizing the responsibility to continue delivering quality journalism in the region.

As the reality of job loss sets in, Alleyne-Williams voiced concerns for her colleagues’ financial stability. “People are living paycheck to paycheck, and being told abruptly that they will be jobless in a month is devastating. Many have loans and other expenses to consider,” she noted.

The Board of Stabroek News reassured staff that it would honor all financial obligations, including severance and benefits. While some may view the closure with indifference, the profound effect on the lives of employees and the local media landscape is undeniable.

As Stabroek News prepares to close its doors, the future of independent journalism in Guyana remains uncertain. The staff’s emotional response underscores the importance of this publication in the community and the significant loss it represents.
