Excavation works have officially commenced at the site of the Moruca Regional Hospital, marking a significant expansion of healthcare services for hinterland communities. The project represents a total investment of GY$4.6 billion.

During a recent site tour, Minister of Health Dr. Frank Anthony highlighted the advanced facilities and comprehensive services that the hospital will provide upon completion. The new 50-bed hospital will offer a range of modern healthcare services, designed to enhance the quality of care in the region.
Key Features of the Moruca Regional Hospital:
Accident & Emergency Department: Equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment.
Operational Pharmacy and Laboratory: Fully functional to support patient care.
Advanced Imaging Suite: Including X-ray and CT scan facilities to enhance diagnostic capabilities.
Operational Theatres: Designed for both routine and complex surgical procedures.
Intensive Care Units: Available for both adults and children.
Specialised Delivery Suite: For maternal health services.
Inpatient Rooms: Comfortable accommodations designed for no more than five beds per room, each with a private toilet and bath.
Additionally, the hospital will feature specialized departments such as:
Ophthalmology: Eye care services.
Audiology: Hearing assessments.
Dental Department: Fully equipped for dental care.
Addressing challenges highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, the facility will include an on-site oxygen plant for local production and dispensing of oxygen. This is aimed at reducing reliance on imported oxygen and ensuring timely access for patients.
Minister’s Remarks
Minister Anthony emphasized that the Moruca Regional Hospital represents a substantial upgrade from existing facilities, greatly improving both infrastructure and quality of care.
“This facility will transform healthcare delivery in the region. From advanced diagnostics and surgical capabilities to comfortable inpatient accommodations, the Moruca Regional Hospital will set a new standard for healthcare services in hinterland communities,” he stated.
The Ministry of Health remains dedicated to enhancing access to high-quality healthcare across Guyana, ensuring that residents in hinterland regions receive the same level of care available in urban centers.
