A Berbice family is mourning the loss of 52-year-old Ravindra Yudeshwar Bishram, who was reportedly beaten to death at the New Amsterdam Psychiatric Hospital.
His relative and caretaker, Diaram Singh, received a call around 8:30 AM on Friday informing him of Ravindra’s death. Following the call, Singh rushed to investigate and was told that Ravindra had either been assaulted or had fallen, leading to his death. He reported the incident to the Central Police Station, prompting an official investigation.
Singh noted that injuries were visible on Ravindra’s face, including signs of violence. “We want justice because several times he got injured, bruises on his face, and hand until it came to this point,” he stated.
Ravindra had been a patient at the institution for over ten years, with his illness beginning at age 15 while attending New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School. Singh mentioned that family members had visited him during the previous Christmas and found him doing well. However, Ravindra’s aunt, Indra Ramsarran, who resides in Canada, revealed that he had been subjected to abuse prior to this incident. She stated that during a recent visit, she observed facial bruises and stitches on him, and Ravindra allegedly disclosed that he had been beaten.
“I never expected him to die like this. We are all hurt and sad about what happened to Ravindra,” Ramsarran expressed, adding, “they need more supervision at the hospital. I don’t know how they are going to fix that problem.”
According to police reports, around 7:50 PM on Thursday, hospital staff heard “gasping sounds” and discovered Ravindra lying in a pool of blood. At that time, a 38-year-old male patient from Bath Settlement, West Coast Berbice, was present in the ward.
Ravindra was transported to New Amsterdam Public Hospital, where he was admitted but unfortunately succumbed to his injuries on Friday, February 20, 2026, at approximately 6:53 AM. A post-mortem examination is pending.
Police have confirmed that the 38-year-old patient has been isolated in a separate room as investigations continue.
