  • News

A fire of unknown origin has completely destroyed the Best Choice Supermarket, a Chinese-owned establishment located in Charity, Essequibo Coast. The fire broke out around 1:30 PM today and quickly engulfed the two-storey building.

The supermarket, owned by Siyi Zheng, occupied the lower flat of the building, which is owned by Guyanese businessman Haimchandra Narine, who resides with his family in the upper flat.

According to reports from Zheng, she was inside the cashier booth when a staff member alerted her to a fire in the ceiling. She immediately grabbed a fire extinguisher in an attempt to control the blaze, but it spread rapidly beyond her reach.

Zheng and her staff managed to escape the building just before it became fully engulfed in flames. There was also one individual in the upper flat at the time, who successfully exited the building as well.

The fire service was contacted, but despite their efforts, the entire structure was lost to the flames. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
