Severe flooding in the West Watooka squatting area of Region 10 has left residents in distress, prompting urgent action from government officials. Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed recently visited the area to assess the situation and deliver much-needed relief to the affected families.

The flooding, which has persisted for weeks, is attributed to blocked drainage systems that prevent water from flowing into the Demerara River. During the visit, residents described the heartbreaking consequences: livestock have drowned, crops are destroyed, and household appliances have been lost. Pensioners are unable to access their pensions, and children are unable to attend school due to the inundated streets and yards.
Local residents indicated that the flooding worsened after emergency roadworks and drainage improvements were undertaken as part of a roundabout project. The contractor, Supreme Distributors, reportedly blocked a main drainage pipe, causing water to become trapped within the community.
Approximately 80 households are affected, many belonging to farmers and small business owners who rely on their livestock and land for their livelihoods. Some residents estimate their financial losses to be in the millions.
After hearing the residents’ concerns, Mohamed engaged with the Regional Executive Officer (REO) and a contractor to expedite the clearing of the blocked pipe, urging immediate action to allow the water to recede.
“No community should suffer in silence while responsibilities are shuffled around and contracts are debated. People need help now, not excuses,” Mohamed emphasized.
The opposition leader committed to pressing relevant authorities to ensure that drainage systems are properly repaired and that affected families receive the necessary relief. Accountability will also be sought for any negligence that contributed to this disaster.
“Our people deserve dignity, safety, and real solutions,” Mohamed stated, vowing to continue efforts to address the crisis and support the affected residents. Further updates on relief initiatives are expected as efforts continue.
