Colwyn King, the former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), has been found guilty of raping a child following a trial at the High Court in Georgetown. A 12-member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict on two counts of rape, related to incidents that occurred in April 2021 involving a female complainant.

The court heard that the first assault took place at night when no one else was present, while the second occurred in the afternoon, also in isolation. The case was presided over by Justice Simone Morris, with the prosecution led by State Counsels Muntaz Ali and Geneva Wills. King was represented by Attorney-at-Law Tonza Sarrabo.
Details of the assaults were presented during the trial, leading to the jury’s decision. King had been out on bail throughout the proceedings but was immediately remanded to prison following the verdict.
Sentencing has been scheduled for July 17, 2025, at 9:00 AM. This is not King’s first encounter with the law; he previously faced a similar rape charge in 2009 but was acquitted by a jury in 2016 after a trial at the High Court. The recent verdict has drawn significant attention and concern within the community.
